Here are two spreads from a book I designed in two columns. I set the type in one column for certain scenarios described in the text and for the footnotes and bibliography entries.
The topic of the book is professional development of childcare workers. The author includes scenarios that describe typical situations that are discussed. The body text is Goudy Old Style and heads are in Rotis. I set the scenarios in a single column, separated from the main text by a decorative border. Even though the measure of the scenarios is longer and the character count is higher than recommended, they are clearly differentiated from the other text, and this treatment avoids flowing the scenario through both columns with few cues to the reader about what is going on.
