I specialize in graphic design for print, particularly of books, monographs, and periodicals. I also design the general gamut of small works, such as brochures, stationery, logos, and related materials for coordinated corporate identity or institutional branding. I also provide editing and project management services in conjunction with publication design.
I have worked in publication design for 40 years, starting with hand-setting type and composing forms of Linotype matter in an old hot-metal shop. Later I worked in a commercial job printer, an advertising art department, and a small regional magazine as editor and art director. I have a bachelor’s in English literature, and then I studied painting at East Carolina University and art history in graduate school at UNC-Chapel Hill.
I worked at UNC for 20 years in two different departments that had large publishing programs, in the course of which I designed and produced well over 150 books and monographs, two quarterly periodicals, many small booklets, posters, and other printed pieces. I retired in 2008 and have operated Michael Brady Design in Hillsborough, NC, since then.
